David R. Campa, MD, MPH, currently serves as Covered California’s Senior Medical Director, Quality and Equity. In this role as one of three physician leaders at Covered California, he supports their efforts to optimize the quality and equity of services provided by health and dental insurance plans through its exchange platform. Covered California provides access to affordable health care to 2 million Californians who don’t have employer-based insurance and who don’t qualify for Medi-Cal, Medicare, or state benefits.
From 2012 to 2024, Dr. Campa worked for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services’ (DHS) Ambulatory Care Network (ACN) as Director of Primary Care and then as Medical Director of the ACN’s High Desert Health Center Group. Prior to joining L.A. County DHS, he served as the Chief Medical Officer for two large federally qualified health centers in California, one rural (GVHC) and one urban (NEVHC). Dr. Campa earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, his medical degree from UC San Francisco, an MPH in Health Policy and Administration from UC Berkeley, and completed his internal medicine residency at Harbor-UCLA followed by a fellowship in Health Services Research at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. After his fellowship, he returned to UCSF for a faculty position in the Division of General Internal Medicine from 1993-2000. Dr. Campa is board certified in Internal Medicine and has remained active as a primary care internist throughout his career serving predominantly Spanish-speaking Latino patients.
